What 6/22 Comics I Would Recommend
Not the strongest of weeks, but then again, it wasn't a very big week either, as far as amount of releases.
Spoilers ahead!
Legion of Super Heroes #7
Even this issue, I felt a bit iffy about recommending because of the extremely lame Cosmic Boy sub-plot.
But when you come right down to it, the Cosmic Boy plot takes up about 3 out of the over-sized full length story in this issue, so I cannot let it (for THIS issue, at least) pull me away from recommending this issue, which is otherwise a very good superhero comic book.
In the last issue, Waid set up the main villain in a very nice manner. He had the villain reveal himself to Brainiac 5, just to torment him, as the villain's power is that he makes people not remember that he exists (which, by the way, is the same power that a character in this week's Rogue...a funny bit of serendipity there).
Well, in this issue, we see Brainiac's clever way around the power, and it leads to a mission on Colu, where Waid channels Grant Morrison in a bunch of the ideas for Colu.
The main battle is fun, as well as the characterizations and interactions of the team members sent on the mission.
I just do not like Waid's take on Cosmic Boy, and I wish that would take up less of the plot.
Conan #17
Check here for why I liked Conan #17, because, well, otherwise I would just say the same things, and that seems silly.
That's it for my recommendations this week, but the following books I thought were good enough for me to consider recommending them...
Captain America #7 - This was a strong fill-in issue, but it was SUCH a fill-in issue. When he is on, this book is easily recommended, but this issue is intentionally a bit off, so I'm just barely not going to recommend it. Nice Leon artwork.
Astro City: The Dark Age #1 - I was looking forward to this book, and I did enjoy it a bit, but I think later on, when the story begins to unfold more, I will enjoy it more.
Catwoman #44 - The same goes for this issue of Catwoman. This was a fine enough issue, I just think more can be done with this book. Great Pete Woods art, though!
Neverwhere #1 - Adaptation of an adaptation...I think you can safely pass on this one. If you've never read it before, just read the novel. Still, if you are really interested in seeing the story in comic form, this is a faithful adaptation, I think.
Teen Titans Go #20 - This reminds me of one of those old Marvels that involved video games. I think it was Thing. Thing gets trapped in Pong, or something like that. In any event, in both stories, the wackiness of being trapped in a video game overshadows the actual story. It WAS fun, though!
Noble Causes #11 - This is another book that seems to be catching its breath a bit. I expect a lot out of the next issue.
Girls #2 - The Luna Brothers have enough talent that it shines through even this hateful book, where there is NOone to root for - there are less people to root for in this story than in the old Super Villain Team-Ups.
Supreme Power #17 - I'm sorry, JMS, I really just think we should have been having this issue at about, oh, I dunno, #8.
Nightcrawler #7 - I like both creators, but this issue just seemed a bit flat to me.
Well, that is it for me, but feel free to tell me what you thought of the week that was!
