Not Impressed
Seen the cover to Warren Ellis' Fell #1? Take a peek.
I don't like the art. Never been a Templesmith fan at all. Nor Ashley Wood, which is exactly what Templesmith seems a clone of, though I'm sure others would argue that he's not. It's a shame because I've enjoyed Ellis' recent creator-owned projects like Ocean and RED and had heard the description for this series and thought it sounded promising. Then I saw the name of the artist.
You know, no offence to Templesmith at all. I'm sure that he's a nice person and does many nice things for people, but his name on anything means no money from me. Same for anything with Ashley Wood's name. Same for Chris Bachalo, which is a shame because I used to really like Bachalo's work, but nowadays his previous detail and linework have turned to nothing more than confusing storytelling and over-exaggerated pin-ups. It's a shame.
I like to feel that I'm getting my money's worth when it comes to the art in my comics. I know, I know, art is subjective and all of that and there are probably people here that would plop down twenty bucks for a headshot of their favorite character from Templesmith or Wood in a heartbeat. That's fine. I like detailed, clear storytelling and anatomy, for the most part. Not a big fan of having to figure out what it is that I'm looking at and what it's supposed to mean.
