8/31 Comics: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Spoilers ahead!!!

THE GOOD

Shining Knight #4 had a really cool twist that I did not see coming at ALL, and I would love to hear from anyone who actually DID see any clues to the twist before it was revealed.

Guy Davis' art in BRPB...he is definitely a treat.

Smoke and Guns was a real blast. Kirsten Baldock and Fabio Moon work together wonderfully.

Will Pfeifer does a great job with Catwoman interacting with Captain Cold, and he makes Cold interesting as well (Pete Woods, in the meantime, continues to rock on the art).

Warren Ellis and Jackson Guice continue a strong series in JLA Classified. Why couldn't Guice just do the covers?

Silent Dragon #2 was a whole lot of fun, with great art from Yu.

Teen Titans Go #20 offered up TWO fun short stories.

The last page of Astonishing X-Men #12 was suitably over the top.

Runaways was a good, "Day In The Life" issue.

THE BAD

Humberto Ramos' art on Revelations. Uh...what the heck was up with that?!?! The book is this serious piece about murder and intrigue in the Vatican...Ramos' super-cartoony style (he is going even cartoonier than normal here) does not fit it well at all, I do not believe.

The second printing covers for Parts 1-3 of Sacrifice. Wonder Woman #219 gets a whole new cover, but the first three parts just get the same cover, with red tint? Lame.

Flash #225 - I think it was trying wayyyyyyyy too hard to be a memorable issue. Like I said last week, significant does not mean GOOD.

All the time and care that was put into Freshmen #1 seemed to be glossed over in #2, in my estimation.

Can five pages pass in an issue of X-Men: The End withOUT someone shapeshifting (almost always in a "But you're not...GASP" sort of manner)? Please? Maybe Book Three will have less of that overdone plot device.

Daredevil: Father #2. I would not have enjoyed this if it came out on time. A year and a half late? Well...what do YOU think?

Wha Huh? - Let's try this one again when people are willing to make fun of themselves for real.

I almost have to give it a good, for the gall of Marvel to try to claim that the Joey Mad Wolverine/Hulk/Spider-Man pin-up was intended all along to be a House of M variant cover.

THE UGLY

The cover of JLA Classified #11

Am I even supposed to care about what goes on in 1602 anymore? It is about as far removed from Gaiman's original as the Batman Strikes Riddler is from Neil Gaiman's Riddler.

Young Avengers - STATURE?! A pal of mine had the perfect quip when he heard it - "It sounds like a store in the mall!" WICCAN?! I can't wait till he fights the phasing member of the X-Men, Jew.

Well, that's it for me!

Feel free to share your reactions of the week so far - good, bad or ugly!

I didn't see the shocking twist in Shining Knight coming, but I didn't think it really made the book any better. Maybe I should re-read the first three issues.

Why do you say you want Guice only on covers? Big Amy Grant fan? (Sorry.)

Hehe...poor Guice.

Did I say I wanted him only on the covers?

Oops.

I meant that I wanted him on the covers AS WELL, instead of the creepy digital art.

I liked Astonishing, but overall, the second arc isn't as good as the first.

Runaways had such ugly art.

GL had such pretty art.

Young Avengers was decent, but I agree, the new names are ass-y.

Amazing Spidey was so bleh, I'm dropping it with the end of this arc.

Robin confused me, I feel like I missed an issue or something. Might drop this too.

New Avengers was enjooyable, but too wordy. I know it seems obvious coming from Bendis, but I felt like the previous NA issues juggled action and talk nicely.
