Captain America and France

The lefties over at Eschaton are more likely to discuss matters like Social Security and War, rather than superheroes. However, a recent page from Captain America #3, linked to from Workbench, got them to talking (scroll down past March 7) about comics. Its interesting to note how Ed Brubaker's take on the Captain differs from the Ultimate Captain America, who once stated: "You think this 'A' stands for France" (in reference to giving up).

In a post on Millarworld, Brubaker defended his portrayal of Cap:

In any case, though, I wasn't putting my views into Steve's mouth, I was writing what felt like an honest portrayal of Cap's experiences in the war. I didn't think anyone who'd fought side by side with the French Resistance, and who'd witnessed, first-hand, the Nazi slaughter of hundreds of innocents because of that resistance, would be like those reactionary right-wing freedom fries morons, most of whom never fought in a war alongside anybody.

I guess in politics, there's a Captain America for everyone. Personally, I like Brubaker's take.
