Marvel pulls The Thing

Tom Breevort confirmed on his Comixfan forum that The Thing ongoing series will end with June's issue #8.

Written by the very talented Dan Slott, the book examined The Thing's life after he found out in the pages of the Fantastic Four that he was, in fact, very rich based on all the money that FF, Inc. had been bringing in over the years. Despite excellent writing, fun stories, great art and guest stars galore, the book failed to build enough of an audience to make it through its first year.

Over on Newsarama, the site where Slott launched his Pull My Thing campaign a few months ago, Slott responds to fans discussing why the book was cancelled:

THE THING launched during the beginning of INFINITE CRISES, the end of HOUSE OF M, and when a large portion of Marvel's promotional dollars were being spent to push SPIDER-MAN: THE OTHER. It was a horrible time to launch ANY book-- let alone a 5th ongoing FANTASTIC FOUR title (FANTASTIC FOUR, MK4, ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR, and MARVEL ADVENTURES FANTASTIC FOUR) that was also coinciding with a couple of FANTASTIC FOUR mini-series and one-shots.

When we got a hold of our opening numbers, there was the overall feeling that we were dead out of the gate-- before ANY fans even had a chance to crack open the cover.

Now if you want to go on comparing my work on THING with the work of HEAVILY promoted creators teamed up with WIZARD TOP TEN artists on FLAGSHIP titles...
...go right ahead. I trust that most posters can see the silliness in that.

Conversely, my point of view is this:

Right now, I've been working on books with 2nd/3rd tier characters-- or characters that I don't even have complete creative control over-- and yet my co-creators and I have somehow developed a devout and loyal fanbase-- heaps of critical acclaim-- and collections which consistently perform better and better as positive word of mouth spreads.

Just imagine what I could do if the powers that be gave me a shot at doing a FLAGSHIP book with a WIZARD TOP 10 guy. I'd kick so much ass it's not even funny.

So when do we start the "Put Dan Slott on a Spider-Man title" campaign?
