Comics Crime Watch: 'Hamburg Umsonst' update

The Wall Street Journal has caught wind of Hamburg, Germany's costumed crimefighters -- or criminals, depending whose side you're on -- Hamburg Umsonst, or "Hamburg For Free."

The masked trio -- Santa Guevara, Spider Mum and Multiflex -- robbed a gourmet store two weeks ago, making off with €1,500 (roughly $1,900 U.S.) worth of upscale items such as Ruinart Champagne, Kobe beef and Valrhona chocolate. As they left, they posed for a photo and gave the cashier a bouquet.

Take that, Booster Gold.

In a note left at the scene of the crime epicureal liberation, the masked marvels claimed that, "without the skills of superheroes, survival in the city of millionaires is impossible."

The Journal, however, sees no humor in the actions of Hamburg Umsonst or similar groups throughout Germany and Spain: "These shenanigans sound like the pranks of middle-class students with too much time on their hands, more interested in enjoying the fruits of capitalism for free than in abolishing it. Given the high unemployment in Germany and Spain, we offer the following free advice: Finish your studies and get a job before you are caught."
