FCBD 2006: 'a banner year for free books'
SFist sorts through its plunder from Free Comic Book Day and declares, "2006 will be remembered as a banner year for free books":
Holy crap, Owly is cute. His free book, "Breakin' the Ice," is a family-friendly, dialogueless adorable quest about some friendly geese and a pudgy owl and a chipmunk and a worm WITH A SCARF. It's not all sunshine and lollipops, though, as these critters are sensitive, easily offended folks. They try to make friends with each other, but oh no someone ate all the birdseed! And oh no someone's tail got stepped on! And oh my God, someone fell through the ice on the pond! That last one caught us a little off-guard, as the conflict of the story had mostly concerned feelings and emotions up to that point. But fear not; though the climax is a bit intense, there's smiles and tasty treats for all in the final pages. Whew. There are also thoughts on Scott Pilgrim, The Aggressive Adventures of Fearless Griggs, The Preposterous Voyages of Ironhide Tom and The Moomins at the link.
