Can't Wait For Wednesday
DC continues strong with One Year Later with reprintings of sold out OYL issues, the first issue of Man-Bat, and an Ex Machina special. Spawn delivers a #1 in 3D and, of course, if it's from Top Cow, there will be multiple covers obviously. Marvel gives us Annihilation Nova #1, pays some respect to George Perez with a Fantastic Four Visionaries volume, and is that Bryan Hitch that I see contributing a variant cover to Iron Man #7? Yes, it is.
Let's see what the TGC staff is checking out this week.
Tom Bondurant's Pick of the Week
My pick for this week is JLA Classified #20. Gail Simone's story of an exiled dictator who takes revenge on the Justice League is a good blend of old-school superhero action and modern politics. Besides, the art (by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez and Klaus Janson) is fantastic.
Stephanie Chan's Pick of the Week
Nextwave: Agents Of Hate #4. Ellis' writing cracks me up and the art team of Immonen, Von Grawbadger and McCaig is cartoony and full of energy that suits the book perfectly. The solicitation for #4 sums up my feelings for Nextwave rather accurately: "Corrupt policeman + giant, hungry robot ÷ Manhattan clam chowder × (origin of The Captain – logic) + Y + a chair³= YOUR FAVORITE BOOK."
Shane Bailey's Pick of the Week
I'm going to have to go with Nextwave: Agents Of Hate #4 too. It's usually a quick fun read that reminds me of why I started reading comics in the first place. Explosions + robots + super secret spy organizations + lots of kicking things = fun.
Chris Hunter's Pick of the Week
Several great choices this week, no doubt, but I'll take Wolverine: Origins #1. Marvel is finally doing something about the elephant in the room otherwise known as Wolverine's past and all that I can say is that it's about freaking time. They've milked that cash cow for all that it's worth and it's nice to see them rectifying the situation and even treating the character with a little respect for once. Most importantly, Daniel Way has really impressed me with recent works such as Bullseye, Greatest Hits, Punisher vs. Bullseye, and the most recent storyline of the main Wolverine monthly series and teaming him with fan-favorite artist Steve Dillon is, well, as the saying goes, just the icing on the cake for me. Check it out.
