Buzz Dixon talks Serenity
The Herald Tribune has a feature story up on Buzz Dixon, former POW! Entertainment employee and creator of the Christian manga Serenity:
Veteran comic book writer Buzz Dixon was an industry veteran when the idea of a lifetime hit him.
Having worked in the animation and the comic industries for more than two decades, Dixon was vice-president of POW! Entertainment, a company started by legendary Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee.
In 2000, Lee asked Dixon to create a Christian comic.
"Stan's idea was Spider-Man at home reading the Bible and the Green Goblin coming over to fight," Dixon said in a telephone interview from his home in Chatsworth, Calif.
He developed a variety of concepts, avoiding the superhero-vs.-supervillain template. Instead, he created a teenage soap-opera about an unhappy girl who finds, well ... serenity.
Lee didn't like it.
"We had an amicable parting of the ways. ... Stan offered me stock in the company or 'Serenity' as severance," he said.
Dixon chose "Serenity."
