Dallas Morning News on the return of El Gato Negro
The Dallas Morning News ran a story this weekend on Richard Dominguez, creator of the comic El Gato Negro:
Deep in the Rio Grande Valley, a masked avenger prowls through the night, on the lookout for drug smugglers and thugs. He's El Gato Negro, the creation of Dallas artist Richard Dominguez – and perhaps the only superhero who happens to be a college-educated Latino Texan.
El Gato Negro debuted in the 1990s with four issues in English and then disappeared into comic darkness. But the series – one of few starring a Latino man – made an impact, influencing artists such as Javier Hernandez, whose El Muerto comic book will soon be made into a movie starring Wilmer Valderrama.
Mr. Dominguez brought El Gato Negro out of hiatus in 2005, and the first issue has so far sold about 1,000 copies. He plans a follow-up this year, once he raises money to cover publishing costs.
