How do you ruin a comic movie? Let us count the ways

As X3 opens and the media blitz for Superman Return gears up, /film offers its helpful list of "Top 10 Ways to Ruin a Movie Based on a Comic Book":

7. Make a movie based on a costumed superhero. There have been some successes, but for the most part it doesn’t work. Costumes fit the comic book world, but they look silly in movies. Even Batman looks ridiculous. If you were going to fight criminals hand-to-hand, would you wear a costume? With a heavy cowl and cape? I think not.

...

3. Tell the origin story in the first movie. The point of making a movie about a comic book character is that the hero is already familiar. Why burn up most of the first movie with the origin story? We already know it. Get to the hero now, and save the origin for a sequel.
The remaining 10 at the link, of course.

Nah, the only surefired way to ruin any movie about comic book characters is to assume that Hollywood knows more about good stories than the comics do. This doesn't mean you just copy the comic book verbatim, movies are a different medium, but if you honestly think the story will be better after you make it more 'mature' or completely rework the story your movie is a sure failure. Treat the story with the respect that Peter Jackson treated Lord of The Rings and you can make a good film.
