Fort Wayne Gazette "outs" Aquaman
The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette recently ran a feature story on Aquaman's revival, which highlights the new creative direction of the comic, as well as the upcoming TV show. It also mentions an "alleged homoerotic subtext" of the character's relationship with Aquaboy in the 1960s cartoon:
Adding to the image problem is an alleged homoerotic subtext that, whether true or not, has dogged Aquaman since his CBS Saturday-morning cartoon in the 1960s. Dressed in a tight-fitting green-and-orange outfit, the blond, bright-eyed dude rode a giant seahorse into action.
His sidekick was Aqualad, a teenager who wore shorts. Some readers wondered what the two were doing under the sea when they weren’t fighting crime.
“There was a quaintness to his 1960s (cartoon) that some people felt was open to interpretation,” Didio says with a laugh.
“He has always been one of the more powerful characters in the DC Universe, but he has not always been portrayed in that fashion.”
Although I think you could probably always point to a perceived "homoerotic subtext" when talking about superhero sidekicks in general, I've never seen it applied specifically to Aquaman and Aquaboy ... not like it has been applied to Batman and Robin.
