APE coverage

City on a Hill Press, the school paper for the University of California Santa Cruz, went to APE last weekend:

This year’s guests included underground talents such as Knight, Black Olive, Justin Green, Alex Robinson, Raina Telgemeier and C. Tyler. Notable programs included a panel of queer cartoonists, a Comic Book Legal Defense Fund sketching duel, and advice on how to pitch comic ideas to larger companies.

After attending APE three years ago, Silady quit his job as an eighth-grade teacher in order to pursue a career in comics.

The result was The Homeless Channel, a comic Silday describes as a vehicle for him to express his complex feelings about the homeless situation. Silady’s enthusiasm on the other side of the table for his second year was hard to miss.

“I’m going to do this as long as I can afford to do it,” Silady said, as his fiancé beamed by his side.

APE is filled with such stories, and the general consensus between creators is that the vibe between booths is supportive rather than cutthroat.

sfist.com also posted a report this week:

SO, folks -- another year, another APE, which is possibly the greatest, most San Francisco-appropriate comics-oriented event around. If you are inclined to purchase sequential art that pushes the limits of creativity and redefines the genre, these are the folks you should give your hard earned green to -- unlike the big publishers, these folks really need your support to keep going. We hope you enjoyed our coverage, and please -- come out for it next year! It happens every April!
