Darktide DVD brings X-Men MiniMates to life

If, like me, you have an uncontrollable fear of toys coming to life and attacking you in the middle of the night, you may want to skip the video preview of the upcoming X-Men MiniMates DVD release, Darktide, which brings to life MiniMate verisons of Wolverine, Storm and Juggernaut, among others. Those who don't may be interested to know that the movie and figures should be available now.

From the press release: Art Asylum and Diamond Select Toys announce the launch of the all-new X-Men MiniMates ® box set, which will include an original 9-minute CGI DVD mini-movie, X-Men Darktide and four MiniMates action figures - Wolverine, Cyclops, Magneto, and Juggernaut. The box set will hit stores including Toys “R” Us, Target, and specialty stores in early April.

“We are very appreciative that Marvel has given Art Asylum the opportunity to bring our MiniMates brand into a new media format,” said Adam Unger, Vice President of Art Asylum. “So far, the reaction from retailers and fans has been overwhelming. We hope that this will be the start of something very exciting for the growing MiniMates brand, and the loyal fans that have supported us in from the beginning,” said Unger.

Art Asylum's MiniMates brand, which debuted in 2002, has been a constant success that has driven the companies' growth. Look for other new MiniMates launching later this year including Speed Racer, StreetFighter, and Battlestar Galactica.

I've always found it a bit weird that at the same time the toy industry grasped that it was adults buying their tat and they were motivated to put some effort into sculpting toys that bore more than a passing resemblence to the characters they were based on, there was a parallel growth in objects that looked like square plastic blocks with barely more than hastily thrown together paint jobs to tell them apart.

But then I never got Lego, either.
