WonderCon wraps up

The 2006 convention scene is officially in bloom, as WonderCon wraps up a weekend of chaotic fandom fun today. Newsarama and Comic Book Resources have the lowdown on all the DC news, like Grant Morrison writing Batman and who will be appearing in 52, as well as the one bit of Marvel news.

Meanwhile, the Bay Area papers offer a non-industry perspective on the weekend, starting with Sal Pizarro, who blogs for the San Jose Mercury News:

On the lines of warning parents, it was a major programming mistake to put the preview for Pixar's new animated film "Cars" right after the spotlight on Kevin Smith, whose Q&A was filled with four-letter words and a few anatomical references. None of this is shocking to fans of Smith's movies (myself included) who packed the large auditorium. But when Smith's program ran long and went into the "Cars" timeslot, you could see lots of parents with kids in the back of the room. Ouch.

SFgate.com's Peter Hartlaub blogged about the con several times this weekend, including a post about the Superman Returns panel::

The "Superman Returns" crowd was filled with die-hard fans, not industry types, so no one was impolite enough to ask about the budget that gossip column types say is soaring out of control. Instead, Singer and Routh answered questions about the size of the "S" on the costume (some fans think it's too small) and the size of Routh's codpiece (some fans think it's too big).

Routh had a pretty good line saying, "Frankly, I don't see the uproar about it, but I suppose you can file it under good news," before describing the codpiece as "like a baseball player's protection, except softer because I don't have to worry about getting hit."

WonderCon wraps up just in time for the folks at Comic Con International, as their travel desk will open at 9 a.m. PST Feb. 15 for hotel reservations for this year's event in San Diego. Don't forget to make your reservations!
