Quesada and Palmiotti reteam on Painkiller Jane
Dynamite Entertainment announced today that Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada and his former Event Comics partner Jimmy Palmiotti will reunite in 2006 to bring Painkiller Jane back to comic shelves, just in time for the debut of her SciFi Channel movie premiere.
Per the press release, Palmiotti seems pretty excited about the book and the relationship with Dynamite:
Arguably, two creators such as Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti could have picked any publisher to relaunch Painkiller Jane. So why Dynamite? Jimmy: "Relationships. I have known the crew here since I have started in the business and that is everything to me. The books they are putting out are actually some I would buy. which is saying a lot coming from me. The printing is excellent, the design top rate and the talent cutting edge. Most important, they are giving us the space to do what we want."
Quesada added:
And Quesada agrees: "I think Jimmy pretty much said it all."
Palmiotti will write the book, with art by Lee Moder. Based on the press release, it seems that Quesada's only involvement is as cover artist and, of course, as co-owner of Painkiller Jane. I did enjoy the quote from the press release that took a few shots at the Punisher:
The first issue is scheduled for February release and will feature Palmiotti as writer, who describes the title character as "an inch away from suicidal at all times. she is on an edge that the Punisher wishes he can get to and come back from. Really. she can kick Punisher's ass because one cap to the head and Frank is dead. not so with a woman that can't die"
So, the obvious questions ... how much is Quesada involved with this book, and why isn't it being published by Marvel under their Icon imprint?
UPDATE: Newsarama addressed this somewhat in their weekly Joe Fridays feature:
NRAMA: With the announcement of the Painkiller Jane series starting up, can you shed some light on how that works with you being the E-i-C? What kind of approval did it require? After all, aren't you technically, working for a competitor?
JQ: From day one of my Marvel Knights deal to my E-i-C contract, it has always been carved out that I could publish previously created Event Comics characters. Also, Marvel has been aware of this from the very beginning and they’ve also been very cool about it.

My guess is it's either to avoid conflicts of interest by having the editor-in-chief's own property published by Marvel, or else maybe Icon is only for books by Marvel-exclusive creators, and Palmiotti is still working on DC books.
A better questions is why are they darkening this character even more (with more sexuality and violence), in a marketplace that seems flooded with such materials, and is usually finding itself under fire for such things (especially regarding women)?
Despite what Palmiotti claims, I don't think there are many who will be thanking them for that.
after PJ comes back, i understand the pair are going to bring back High-Top Fades, Flying Toasters and Color Me Badd.
we're gonna party like its 1991!
woo-hoo!
