The Week at the Curve

Week of July 31, 2005

I got home rather late from Wizard World Chicago last night, where I was humbugged to learn far too many things are staying the same. Spider-Man is still going to be a giant jalopy of a mess come the new big crossover this fall; the Books of Magic cast is on another undetermined hiatus; and there is still no decent affordable food within a reasonable distance of the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center. I came. I bin-browsed. I finally tracked down an Absolute Authority Vol. 1 slipcase edition. I left poorer and dehydrated. Viva las conventions (though minus Wizard World Atlanta, as you saw reported last Monday).

Nevertheless, great stuff was flying around the Curve this last week. Just check out these great bites from Frank Miller, Peter David, and Andy Diggle, the last of whom even did a sitdown with some guy named Segura, a man with whom I'm all too quick bemoan the expiration of The Losers. Neal Adams probably had my favorite thoughts of the week though. Lend him an ear and send a card to Marvel yourself.

Movies were also a hot topic this week. Joss Whedon talked Wonder Woman. Peter David talked Multiple Man. And Dave Lewis talked about the trip-ups of origins in comic movies largely. Meanwhile, I saw the V for Vendetta trailer at the Vertigo panel yesterday and was mildly impressed. It seems to have the look down; although I think it might actually help its cause if they were to detach "From the creators of the Matrix Trilogy" from the opening credits. Just a suggestion.

And there was really more to address than I can possibly contain in a weekend cap this last week. I'd encourage you to browse for yourself. Also, I'll be driving back from a wedding in Columbus next Sunday, so it's likely you'll be deprived of my round-up on Sunday for a third week running unless anyone's got a satellite modem and voice recognition software they'd be willing to loan me for the drive back. Just a thought. 'Til then, see you round the Curve.
