What 6/29 Comics I Would Recommend

Spoilers ahead!

Seven Soldiers: Shining Knight #3

Two complaints to start off.

1. Morrison's new addition to the DC Universe, this supernatural FBI, while not being a BAD idea, is also not all that original. I mean, what exactly is the difference between these guys and the DEO that Chase was a part of?

I can't think of any real difference.

2. It is rare for Morrison to give away a plot point so obviously so early in the story, but the moment that the lady couldn't take the sword out of the sheath, that was basically just telling us - SHE IS EVIL!

Beyond that, this issue was another winner from Morrison and Bianchi (and let us never forget the efforts of Dave Stewart on colors...he is amazing, isn't he?).

This issue is the first of all the Seven Soldiers stories to truly lay out the point of the series and what the purpose of this story event is, at least as far as the Seven Soldiers themselves are concerned.

In addition, Morrison explains why this Shining Knight is unlike the previous Shining Knight. And, as this is Morrison, he does so in a clever way.

However, as interesting as this all is, it still DOES slow the book down again, which is why the action scenes are quite a welcome sight.

And, come on, Shining Knight with a gun?

Awesome.

This is such a cool series.

Really cool cover, too!

Solo #5

See here why I absolutely loved this issue.

Planetary #23

This was a very interesting origin story for the Drummer.

It opens with a discussion between Jakita and Drummer about the purpose of Snow. Jakita is understandably unenthused about Snow at the moment, while Drummer is still a fan.

Part of his expression of why he still likes Snow is bourne out in the flashback itself, as we learn how Snow, Chase and Jakita freed Drummer from a Oliver Twist-like existence.

Some really cool action sequences (John Cassaday is quite a good artist) and some well handled character interactions make this a very good issue of Planetary, even if you, like many, do not exactly recall what happened in the last issue or two that well.

Finally, what do you folks think? Do you agree with Drummer? Is Snow a "saver"?

Batman #641

Check here for why I enjoyed this issue enough to recommend it.

By the by, Matt Wagner sure is a good artist, isn't he?

JLA Classified #9

This seemed a bit rushed, but all in all, it was still a fun story with very nice art by Maguire.

Of course, it also ended up with that last panel, that has gotten more attention than the rest of the issue combined.

And yeah, that last panel IS pretty darn creepy.

And bittersweet.

Stupid Infinite Crisis...hehe.

Young Avengers #5

I was torn on this issue, because I am not a huge fan of any of the characters (except maybe Hawkyebird, or Mockingeye, or whatever she is calling herself), but I have to give Heinberg and Cheung a lot of credit - they really deliver with the action sequences, and there is just enough characterization that the story ISN'T just action, which is always nice.

The ending, though.

Jaysus.

Marvel really needs to quit it with the whole "You won't believe what happens in ___" because the endings are almost ALWAYS a big disappointment compared to the hype.

"You will NEVER BELIEVE who shows up in Avengers!"

"Magneto? Wow. What a stunner" (that was sarcasm...hehe).

"You will be STUNNED by Young Avengers #5"

"Well...not really."

"House of M #3 will break the internet in half!"

"Not with THAT ending it won't. Perhaps you meant "will make the internet yawn."

Still, the hype of other people really shouldn't bear upon what Heinberg is doing, so I cannot let it detract from his work in this issue, which I thought was quite good.

That's it for my recommendations this week, but the following books I thought were good enough for me to consider recommending them...

X-Men #172 - I thought that this issue might be the strongest one yet from Milligan.

Batgirl #65 - Good, but a little too tied into Bat-continuity.

That's it for me!

But feel free to share your thoughts of the week that was!
