The Week at the Curve
Week of May 15, 2005
This was a week for drawing lines and taking sides. So whether you you're on the side of Rann, Thanagar, George Lucas, or good taste, this was one to check out if you found yourself unable to follow the week' events.
Everyone's got an opinion, and I just wanted to take a few seconds to respond to a couple of my favorites, which you might have missed if you weren't checking TGC regularly. First off, to Peter David, who also saw Episode III this week: at least the outcome and treatment of the rest of the story should come as a pleasant surprise to you. I pity the childhoods of anyone who grows up only seeing this first God-forsaken trilogy. Memo to Rob Liefeld, who believes that Hush hailed the return to 90s styled decompressed storytelling: Comparing Batman: Long Halloween and Dark Victory to Hush is about as useful as crediting the quality of Episode III for ushering in a renaissance of interest in sci-fi films. I don't buy it. Then lastly, to Brian Azzarello, who stands up for Superman and Batman's conflicted psyches: I wished you'd done more to express that in Superman, but thanks for being that kind of writer when you're on your game.
TGC acquired a new voice in our own opinion stables this week, whose work you should check out if you have not yet had the pleasure. I am talking about Mr. A. David Lewis, the Mortal Coils author whose first post-introduction post mapping out superhero archetypes is also up for your reading satisfaction.
Then, in a cluster of other nods to the week, I'll miss Frank Gorshin, and you should too; Tom Strong is probably a fascist, but at least he's got a great smile; everyone loves Kang; and even if he does screw up the future at some point, at least there's a chance we all might beat him to it.
