The Week at the Curve

The week of March 13th saw a special kind of madness settle on TGC with our own brands of upsets and no. 1 seeds. Not to imply anything negative about you being a seed, TJ. In fact, that's really not a parallel metaphor at all. Sorry. I'm on spring break in Alabama right now, and not in my right mind due to some cat allergies aggravated by a certain house pet of my pal and his girlfriend. Anyhow, for this week's look back in our VH1-inspired "Remember Last Week," I've setting up my own mini-brackets of posts as seen here on TGC.

WEST REGIONAL

Film News Bracket
1 Whedon on Wonder Woman
VS.
2 Matthew Vaughn on X3

Witty Fanboy Discussion Bracket
1 Do we need Wolverine?
VS.
2 What happened to Chris Bachalo's art?

EAST REGIONAL

Frank Interview With a Creator Bracket
1 Brian K Vaughn
VS.
2 Allan Heinberg

Best New Thing Bracket
1 Incredibles DVD
VS.
2 We3 TPB

And now for the breakdown: In a predictable win over the underdog no-name director, Matthew Vaughn, who did show surprising promise in his underground success Layer Cake, Joss Whedon excites far more fans and generates infinitely more positive reaction, thus taking his bracket and going on to meet the winner of...

"The Witty Fanboy Discussion Bracket," in which the number one seed was immediately given to King of the Witty Fanboys, Zach Harrison. However, Stefan represented the geek factor much better than anyone on Zach's when it came to sheer knowledge and geeky interest in the subject matter. Plus, I like Wolverine and think Millar's run has been incredible. So Zach falls victim to an upset, and the Bachalo post moves on like UW-Milwaukee.

In the EAST, the big match-up everyone was watching ends up being Vaughn and Heinberg, two of the most talented pens in comics. Heinberg, being a newby to comics takes the 2 seed though, and takes Vaughn into overtime. Getting a winner out of the test comes down to the wire as Heinberg achieves a slame dunk with his "Naked Man Test" comment, and leaves the Vaughn interview in tears with shattered dreams of a championship.

Though We3 was a gorgeous book with an original premise. No special features though...no championship. Also, the cover alone could not stand up to Lea's passionate plea. The DVD moves on.

With the fans behind him then, Whedon brings his legions before Bachalo and breaks a few tourney record, going on to face with the winner of Heinberg VS. The Incredibles DVD. And here, we're really pitting Lea's love for her favorite Pixar heroes against my awestruck respect for Young Avengers and The O.C.. So of course, Heinberg wins (for lack of Illinois being in the tournament), and thus, our Week at the Curve is a wrap. Thanks for tuning in, Cadets. See ya next week when I'm back in blustery Illinois.
