Off the barbarian coast

Scott Allie talks about why Dark Horse's recent Conan revival worked at Newsarama:

We had a unified vision. Kurt came in with a really strong and determined approach to how he wanted to do it, and the reason we went with him is because that approach was exactly what Mike and I had been looking for. The whole idea was to remain true to the pulps. Dark Horse has done a lot with pulp characters over the years, like Doc Savage and The Shadow, but we’ve had even more success with new material that draws strongly from pulp inspiration – Hellboy, Sin City, even Star Wars. I think our approach to Conanwas to go more the route of Hellboy and Sin City than Doc Savage and Shadow – do something totally faithful to what made the pulps memorable, but make it thoroughly modern. By exploring our own ideas of how to balance that, hopefully we’ve come up with something completely original.
I was never a big fan of the original books, but must say I'm loving the Busiek/Nord version. Where does it fall for others? Better? Worse?
