This is Bothersome to Me
Now that the storyline has ended, Newsarama's Matt Brady sits down with Brad Meltzer to reflect on the miniseries that was Identity Crisis. I'm not sure what disturbs me more, Brady actually using the term "mofo" in an interview question, or the following Meltzer quote:
I then plotted the whole book out: the deaths, the rape, the ascendancy of the villains, bringing Deathstroke to the forefront of the DCU, hinting at Hal's return, Robin’s father, the new Boomerang, all the interconnecting relationships that add community to this supposed real universe, and of course, the mindwipes.
Right there, Meltzer summarizes what was right (for some) or wrong (for others like myself) about the story. Just something about his almost grocery listing of events that includes a character's rape, a father's death, and --oh yeah-- "don't forget to pick up the mindwipes along with the milk, honey!" that just hits me wrong.
I'm 95 percent sure the next comic that Meltzer writes is going to be something I enjoy. He's a solid storyteller in my estimation. In fact, I respect him immensely, having had the pleasure of interviewing him once or twice. It's the story he set out to tell this time around and the harbinger it serves as for the DC universe that disturbs me.
