Canadian Comic Book Awards Announced
Newsarama has posted the press release for the 2005 launch of the Shusters...
"Canada is about to get its own award recognizing outstanding achievement in the creation of comic books: the SHUSTER, named after pioneering Toronto-born artist Joe Shuster who, along with writer Jerry Siegel, created the iconic super-powered hero, Superman.
"The nomination process is now under way to select and honour the best work by Canadian comic book creators in 2004. Results will be announced and awards will be presented at a gala ceremony on April 30, 2005, at the Paradise Comics Toronto Comicon, which will be held at the National Trade Centre, Exhibition Place, in Toronto, Canada. Plans call for future ceremonies to be held at other major comic conventions across Canada."
Anything that shines attention on what's great in comic books is a good thing, and I certainly dig the Canadian focus (being Canadian myself), so I'm thinking this could be pretty cool. I may even see about checking the results out at the con, given that it takes place in my backyard. If any of you show up, the first round of booze is on me.
My money's on Adrian Tomine taking something home for his work out of Canadian Drawn & Quarterly. Love his stuff, and he did put out a couple of things in 2004, didn't he? A sweet sketchbook and a new issue of Optic Nerve come to mind, unless I've gone all time-impaired again.
