50 Best DC Characters? You Tell Us!
Now that Andrew Wheeler has compiled a list of Marvel's 50 Best Characters, we here at the Curve want your input on DC's best fifty.
We should probably establish a couple of ground rules, owing to the (shall we say) flexible nature of DC's history:
1. For purposes of this survey, retcons, reboots, and multiversal duplicates count as the same character, unless the differences are pretty significant. Thus, a vote for "Lex Luthor" includes Earth-1 Purple Jumpsuit Luthor and Red-Haired Post-Crisis Luthor, but not Earth-3 Hero Luthor. Likewise, a vote for Kara Zor-El is not a vote for Peter David's Linda Danvers.
2. To keep things simple, please vote only for characters who have appeared in the mainstream DC books. This includes DC books that later became Vertigo titles (Doom Patrol, Sandman, Swamp Thing, etc.). Basically, if a character could have appeared in Crisis On Infinite Earths or Infinite Crisis, he/she/it qualifies.
3. You don't have to come up with fifty characters, but more entries means a more diverse final list. I will try to include an "others receiving votes" category.
4. Entries should be e-mailed to me at brainallgone at prodigy dot net. Please put "50 DC Characters" in the subject line. Please identify characters by codename and real name, where applicable.
5. As much as I value the wit and wisdom of the blogosphere (really!), please do not include comments with your entries. I would want to include too many of them in the follow-up post, and that would make it too long.
6. Please rank the characters in your entry from 1 to 50. The #1 character gets 50 points, the #2 gets 49, and so on.
7. Deadline for entries is Tuesday, May 23, at 11:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time. [The original deadline was Friday, May 19, but I realized it might take a weekend to come up with a good list.]
8. This is only an exhibition, this is not a competition, so please -- no wagering.

Does Grant Morrison count?
I have actually given this a lot of thought, but I have to say no, because otherwise it would open the floodgates to Julie Schwartz, Cary Bates, Elliott Maggin, the DC staffers from that Bat-Mite story (including Bob Rozakis and Michael Golden), and whoever else inserted themselves into a story over the years.
Besides, neither Stan Lee nor Jack Kirby made the top 50 in the Marvel poll.
(Sorry to be so serious, but I didn't want to be too dismissive. It was a clever comment!)
Just a bit of clarification: please try to identify the characters by real name, and not just "Robin" or (especially) "Green Lantern." The final list will be of individuals, not costumes.
As for those who have changed costumes over the years, a vote for the person counts for that person regardless of costume. Thus, a vote for Barbara Gordon counts for her whether she's identified as Batgirl or Oracle.
Thanks again for voting!
Tom
Batman.
I'm More of a Marvel lover, but I'm reading DC's books (Mostly events) and I know lots of their characters and their history. Batman is the best among them. Yes, even than the Big S himself.

It's hard to know what defines "great". I left out Wonder Woman and Robin because I've never liked those characters at all. Yet greatness measured by impact would have to by include those two. The way I ranked was who would I want to include in any story I was writing.
Some characters I've always thought had a lot of potential built into them. This was more important than historical significance, popularity and so forth.
Here's mine, in order:
1. Superman
2. Batman
3. Wonder Woman
4. Flash (Wally West)
5. Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)
6. Captain Marvel
7. Green Arrow
8. Plastic Man
9. Darkseid
10. The Joker
11. Robin (Tim Drake)
12. Black Canary
13. Mr. Miracle
14. Catwoman
15. Lex Luthor
16. Sandman (Morpheus)
17. Deadman

It's OK -- yours is a good example!
I do not have the time, nor the cognitive capacity, to sit down and write out 50 characters. So, here are my top ten.
1.) Batman
2.) The Joker
3.) Green Lantern (any - the entire concept behind GL is sci-fi of the highest order. If I had to pick one, I'd say Hal Jordan)
4.) Superman
5.) Darkseid
6.) Wonder Woman
7.) Aquaman
8.) Two-Face
9.) Brainiac
10.) Flash (Wally West)
...I just want to know where I can find a print of that DC artist jam image up there. *_* And when and HOW that was put together?!
I would say my fav. are Lobo, superman, Joker, and Birraro.
