Monarch of the Moon Hoax

As reported by Sci-Fi Wire, Dark Horse Entertainment has been having a little fun with the fans. As previously reported, Monarch of the Moon was a long-lost movie serial from World War II that was intended to be used by the U.S government as a propaganda tool.

That's not the case. The movie is a new production by Dark Horse that was envisioned as a spoof the old sci-fi movie serials like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers.

The false back story was merely a means to generate plublicity for the film. It has similarities to the Blair Witch Project promotions from some years back. Only in this case the contents of the movie were not expected to be believed, but the outrageous back story was. Looking back at the initial promotions, the details about several extras dying and the infiltration of German spies into the production make it a less than convincing hoax.

For other examples of the made up movie production, check out the Forgotten Silver mockumentary made by Peter Jackson.
