Did Matt Idelson Spill The Action Beans?
The identity of the new Action Comics writer has been guarded like Deep Throat for some time now, but a close reading of Matt Idelson's Newsarama interview may have brought it into the open.
Consider these quotes:
The common denominator in those two selections is Idelson's discussion of both Kurt Busiek and Geoff Johns prospectively; that is, in terms of both the "Up, Up And Away!" crossover and future Superman stories. The "how they'll handle Supes" phrase is the kicker for me, because it would have been just as easy to say "how Supes will be handled" or "how Kurt and the new person will handle Supes." The first selection is a little more innocuous, but in the context of the other one they reinforce each other.
So, is Geoff Johns the new Superman writer? Rich Johnston thinks so (and thinks he'll have help, but I don't know how much credence to put into that part of it). With this interview, Matt Idelson might have inadvertently confirmed it.
Consider these quotes:
[MI:] [...] And I really think the boys have a tremendous handle on who this guy Clark is. And who's hipper than Kurt and Geoff?
[... and later ...]
"Up, Up & Away!" is the story that's going to define what Superman the character and the books will be all about. Geoff and Kurt are setting the table for both how they'll handle Supes and what kind of stories and feel you can expect later on. While the story in and of itself is pretty epic and wild, it's really just setting the table for how we think the next few years will go. [emphases added]

What has been absolutely confirmed is that it is a writing pair, and it is (according to Adam Kubert) impressive that they have gotten these two to write the book.
Therefore, I can easily buy Rich's take on the situation.
So I am writing it in that it is Donner and Johns.
Where was the pair confirmed? Looks like I missed that.
This isn't a response to Tom's question, 'cause I don't know the answer to that. Just wanted to point out that Idelson also said, "I really think (the new Action writer is) going to live up to the anticipation and hype. And I rarely say things like that."
That doesn't really fit Geoff Johns. Would anyone really be excited by that news? Richard Donner, on the other hand...
Adam Kubert's interview about Action Comics mentions a writing pair.
