Forward Thinking: "And The Rest" Part 2
JK and I are finishing up our look at books coming out in April from all those publishers that you find in the back of Previews. If we've missed some potential gems, please let us know.
And away we go!
ACTOR
ACTOR THE DEFINITIVE DREADSTAR HC
JK: Good cause, good book; definitely goes down as some of Starlin's best work. If you have an extra $50 laying around, check this out.
Hisham: Very good series, but I think I'll stick with getting a softcover edition.
ADHOUSE BOOKS
SUPERIOR SHOWCASE #1
JK: I enjoyed the Project Superior collection last year, and issue #0, which came out last year for Free Comic Book Day. So this should be fun.
AIT/ Planet Lar
Available Light
Hisham: A collection of short writing and digital photography by Warren Ellis. I'm not sure what to expect from this book, except for more of Ellis's unique world view.
Alternative Comics
Bogus Dead
Hisham: An about mankind's last days with contributions from 42 cartoonists that include James Kochalka and James Mahfood. I normally don't like anthologies because you tend to only get a sample of cartoonists you like and then a lot of material that you don't. Still, this could be an opportunity to check out some emerging talent.
JK: On the other hand, I'm a big anthology fan, esp. when they let independent creators really cut loose (like the Bizarro books from DC or Project Superior). This sounds like it will fall into that vein.
Amaze Ink/Slave Labor Graphics
Tron: The Ghost in the Machine #1
JK: The second title in Slave Labor's deal with Disney. It still boggles my mind how a smaller indy company like Slave Labor ended up with such a big licensing opportunity, but the two Haunted Mansion comics released so far were kind of fun, so I think it works. I'm interested to know if these books are being sold in the Disney parks or through other Disney venues.
Hisham: SLG and Disney, does seem like an odd pairing. I wonder if there's an Apple Dumpling Gang series in the works.
Avatar Press
Wolfskin #1
Hisham: Warren Ellis takes on sword and sorcery, one genre that he hasn't done much with. It will be interesting to see if he can produce a book that can escape being constantly compared to Conan.
JK: Conan on crack!
The Chronicles of Wormwood-Preview
Hisham: Garth Ennis has a new book about the Anti-Christ. Like you didn't see something like this coming from his twisted mind.
JK: Jesus on crack!
Boom! Studios
Cthulhu Tales #1
Hisham: Ok, about my previous comment about anthologies, I take that back. A collection of Lovecraft stories by various creators does get peek my interest. I also never would have imagined Keith Giffen participating.
JK: I'm guessing Giffen's participation has more to do with the publisher than the subject matter, as he does a lot of work for them. I've been impressed with Boom!'s offerings so far, from Hero Squared to 10 to Giant Monsters ... hopefully this will continue to impress.
Burlyman Entertainment
Shaolin Cowboy #5
Hisham: Geof Darrow. Geof Darrow. Nuff said.
Checkerbook Publishing Group
Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon Volume 4
Hisham: Bravo to Checkerbook for bringing a new reprint of Raymond's classic strips.
First Second
The Fate of the Artist
Hisham: A new autobiographical comic from Eddie Campbell, or is it something more?
1 Comments:
Gents,
Thanks for the positive feedback! Much appreciated.
Giff's had a hankerin' to do a Cthulhu private eye for some years -- as long as I've known 'em -- so I told him to batter up.
Ironically, I think he's doing a Seuss Cthulhu riff instead. Brace yourself.
Best,
-R
