What 5/4 Comics I Would Recommend

The title of this was just BARELY accurate, as it was pretty darn close to being "What 5/4 Comic I Would Recommend," as there was not a lot of comics to choose from this week.

Spoilers ahead!!

Y The Last Man #33

I am really enjoying this story arc by Brian K. Vaughan and guest artist Goran Sudzuka (with able inks as always by Jose Marzan, Jr.).

This issue is one of those twist and turns issue where everyone is not who they say there are, but what is cool about that is that in this world that Vaughan has created for us, that makes PERFECT sense.

When characters make revelations, they are totally realistic.

The story is that Yorick and the gang are on a ship that is either a pirate ship or being hunted by pirates...with the only still intact Navy in the world fast on their heels.

Last issue, we also saw two characters finally get together, and I have to admit, the quick return to a tension between the two fell a bit flat to me. Almost reminds me of those "Will they or won't they?" shows that finally get the characters together, then have to come up with ways to get the characters APART. While the fact that this DOES happen is realistic, it does not make it enjoyable to see, as it is a trope we are all so familar with in fiction.

However, that is a minor gripe, and the main thing to remember is that this tells an interesting story with interesting characters, with nice art and a helathy dose of humor!

Shining Knight #2

I am really enjoying this series, and I was really ready to be disappointed in this issue after the stellar first issue (as I felt the ending of the first issue left Morrison in a bit of tight fix, plot-wise).

However, this issue picks up quite nicely.

Simone Bianchi's art is a bit more sketchy in this issue, but it is still a joy to view.

This is one of those Morrison titles, though, that lives and dies not by the characterization of the characters (like Klarion), but by the sheer volume of cool ideas, and this issue does not fail to deliver the goods.

A guilt monster, a colorful group of gangsters, and a talking horse (of course) all lead up to an ending where we learn that some knights' virtue can withstand anything - and the setup for next issue looks extremely promising.

I did not read Sea of Red #2, but I have heard many good things about it. The same goes for Jason's Why Are You Doing This? graphic novel.

The following comics I liked well enough, but I would not go as far as to say I recommend them:

Blood of the Demon #3 - Probably the first issue of the series that I would NOT recommend. This book was a bit all over the place. Really nice art, though.

Fallen Angel #20 - I have found that I am not a big fan of resolution issues on titles that were cut short. This was no exception.

Intimates #7 - This had a lot going for it (including a wickedly biting portrayal of a young executive), but my main concern with this title is that I never felt that we got to know the characters well enough to CARE what happens to them, and that is a big drawback, with this issue in particular.

Justice League Unlimited #9 - This was a fun issue.

Villains United #1 - These gigantic cast books are hard to write, so it is impressive when one is as good as this one was.

Power Pack #2 - I liked it, but there was basically NO action. I want SOME action!

Ultimate Fantastic Four #18 - Once again, this read like a really good 1/2 of a comic. Combined with #17 as one comic, it read pretty well.

What did y'all think of the week past?
