Renowned cartoonist, O V Vijayan dead

Even though, without looking, I'm certain Tom Spurgeon has this up already, I'll link to it anyway: Renowned cartoonist, O V Vijayan died March 30.

Seventy-five-year-old Ootupulackal Velukutty Vijayan, who was awarded Padma Shri in 2001 for his contribution to literature, was ailing for a long time.

He was admitted to the Corporate Care Hospital following complications arising from Parkison’s disease two weeks ago, hospital sources said. He was on ventilator for the past few days and his vital organs failed to respond to treatment. The end came at 8.30 a.m.

Vijayan, who was based in New Delhi for a number of years, had shifted here a few years ago. He is survived by his wife, Ms Teresa Gabriel and a son. His nephew, Mr Ravishankar is also a well-known cartoonist.

A well known political cartoonist, Vijayan had joined the now-defunct Shankar’s Weekly and later The Patriot. He had also worked for The Hindu and The Statesman.
