Stan Lee airs Marvel-ous victory
60 Minutes Wednesday is airing an interview with comic book legend Stan Lee tonight at 8 p.m., Eastern. Lee, who stands to make millions after winning a lawsuit against Marvel Comics earlier this month, talked about his decision to sue the company he's worked at his entire adult life.
Lee told Correspondent Bob Simon he was hurt by Marvel Comics' resistance to paying him part of the profits made off characters he created over his 60-year career with the company. In recent years, Lee creations such as "Spider-Man," "X-Men," "Daredevil" and the "Incredible Hulk" have all been translated into blockbuster films, generating millions of dollars. "My contract called for me getting a certain share of the profits [for] movies, television, licensing and so forth, and I think when the contract was written, nobody may have expected that those movies would be so successful," Lee said.
On Jan. 19, 2005 a federal judge awarded Lee 10 percent of the profits Marvel made on the "Spider-Man" movies, as well as other films based on his creations. When asked how he plans to spend the money, Lee replied, "I could always use a new pair of sneakers."
Stan Lee is the best. I want him to live with me just so I can hear random cries of "Excelsior!" in the morning. And shit, with 10 percent of those movie profits in his pocket Stan could create his own line of sneakers.
