Soviet Super Apes

I've just finished reading Grant Morrison's The Filth, an extremely trippy read that featured a talking communist ape assassin, Comrade 9.

Now I come across this article from The Scotsman. Apparently, Stalin wanted to create a breed of super soldier by mixing humans with apes.

Ok, so how many other fictional works can you name that have similar premises? Have we been living in a comic book reality all this time?
